Cedar City will license your pets at the Low Cost MVP Vaccination & Micro-chip Clinic on Friday from 5 to 6:30PM. Save yourself a special trip to City Offices and have everything done at once.

If your pet has been spayed or neutered, bring your certificate of proof for your discount. If your dog has already been vaccinated for rabies (rabies are good for 3 years with adult dogs), bring your proof of vaccination as well. Licensing is $10 with spay neuter certificate or $50 without.

Licensing Your Pet in Cedar City

If you live within Cedar City Limits, your dog (or cat) is supposed to be licensed with the city. A dog tag will be issued at the time of purchase and should be on your dog’s collar.

Currently, there are two locations that you can license your dog. One is at the Cedar City Animal Control, 435-586-2960, 1150 Kitty Hawk Drive, Cedar City and the other at the City Offices, 435- 586-2953 10 N. MainStreet, Cedar City.

The cost to license is $10.00 if your pet is spayed or neutered and $50.00 for unspayed/unneutered pets.

You must submit proof of rabies at the time of licensing and also proof of spay/neuter to get the discount.

If you purchase your license through the Animal Control office, you can pay only by cash, check or money order.

If you purchase your license through the City Offices, you can also pay by credit or debit.

Friends of Festival Country K-9s has offered their services to the City to license pets for the City at the Low Cost Vaccination and Micro-Chip Clinic on a monthly basis. We have still not heard anything back on this offer. Another idea that we would like to suggest, is that the City allow the local veterinarians to license pets at the time their clients get their pet's yearly vaccinations. We believe doing things this way would benefit our citizens as well as the City.

Purchasing a tag at a local pet store with your pet’s name on it does NOT CONSTITUTE being licensed by the city.

If your dog is picked up AND LICENSED by the City, they will return your dog to you without charge so you will not have to pay impound fees, if they can contact you.

If your dog is not licensed, you will have to pay an impound fee of $20 and $10 per day “boarding”. By state law, they only have to hold the dog for 5 days before it becomes available for adoption.

A SECOND Offense fee is $40 with $10 per day and the THIRD Offense if $60.00 with a $10.00 per day charge.

It makes sense to have your dog licensed with the City. It could save you a lot of money in the long run if your pet is an escape artist.

Meeting Notes for Cedar City Dog Park Group for Feb. 2012

The following are the meeting notes from the February 2012 Friends of the Cedar City Dog Park Group:

Called meeting of Friends of Cedar City Dog Park

February 22, 2012 @ 6PM

Cedar City Library inthe Park

Attending: Diane Gil, Bruce Gil, Paul White, Julie LeBaron, Lynne Brown, Kim Ritz, Jessica Van Woeart,Sarah Scott, Jeri Kelsey, Bitsy McClain, Cindy Butts, Gail Workman.

The meeting was called to order at 6:10 PM and Diane Gil initiated discussion of the FCCDP board. Due to the requirements of filing for the 501 c (3) status, our group will need a Board of Directors and officers. Diane & Kim had worked on developing the By-laws and Articles of Incorporation. Kim presented a written copy of the draft which many had also received on email earlier this week. We went through the Articles and people made various suggestions for change. Sarah Scott recommended that the Board of Directors (BOD) have a Director of Communication. We need someone who hasskills at PR and public speaking. After discussion and agreement, Jessica VanWoeart accepted the nomination for this position. Paul White also agreed to assist with the PR duties. In discussing the needs and roles of the other people on the BOD, Lynne Brown recommendedthat the total BOD should have up to 9 people including the officers. Bitsy McClain would like for someone to be charged with updating the website and monitor the Face Book page. As of this point, Diane and Bruce Gil have been doing this task.

In addition to the discussion and nomination of officers,the group discussed the long term mission of this non-profit incorporation and determined that a more encompassing name would benefit the mission after the dog park is established. The name“Friends of Festival County K-9s” (FFCK-9) was approved by all. Since the Friends of Cedar City Dog Park has already gained some momentum and namerecognition with a great new logo and advertising, we will continue to use that name for the purposes of developing the dog park in Cedar City.

The following nine board member names and officer nominations for the FFCK-9 were put forward to the entire group for a vote:

Secretary: Lynne Brown

Director of Communication: Jessica Van Woeart

Director of Education: Gail Workman

Director of SUU Relations: Sarah Scott

Animal Welfare Specialist: Bitsy McClain

Technology Specialist: Bruce Gil

The group in attendance voted unanimously to approve this Board of Directors and Officers of Friends of Festival Country K-9s.

As a group, the people attending this meeting agreed thatfuture meetings will be held on the second Tuesday of each month at 6 PM. For the next two months, we have the largemeeting room reserved at the Cedar City Library. The next meeting is Tuesday, March 13.

Diane and Bruce have requested that anyone having signed petitions in support of the dog park need to get them to Bruce. He is in the process of uploading all the names on to the website and has a total of 985 to this date. He is sure we will be over 1,000 very soon.

Kim will be in touch with the officers to sign theArticles of Incorporation as required by Bruce Hughes who is filing for thenon-profit status.

In speaking with Cedar City Officials and City Council Members over the last few months, The Cedar City Dog Park Group has found that the number one complaint has been that there is dog waste left behind everywhere.

Our hope is to curtail this problem by bringing awareness to the general dog owning public that this is NOT acceptable.

Beside the fact that there are serious health risks to humans as well as dogs by not picking up after dogs, it is just plain disgusting.

One gram of dog waste contains up to 23 MILLION fecal coliform bacteria which are known to cause cramps, diarrhea, intestinal illness and serious kidney disorders in humans.

Dog Waste is the most common carrier of:

Parvo Corona Virus Heartworms

Whipworms Salmonellosis Roundworms

Hookworms Tapeworms Cryptosporidiosis

Campylobacteriosis

Leaving behind a dog’s waste in our parks, on our walking trails, in town and especially in a neighbor’s yard is certainly not neighborly but is also dangerous, disrespectful, irresponsible, and downright insulting. These few people are giving ALL dog owners a bad name.

If you see someone not picking up after their pet, please inform them of the dangers and ask that they do.

The parks provide waste bags and it is easy enough to carry baggies or used shopping bags while walking.

Not picking up after pets is how dog owners will get banned from our park system. A perfect example is the Lake on the Hill next to the Aquatic Center. Because a few irresponsible dog owners did not pick up after their pets, the remainder of the dog owning population has been banned.

We are OFF and....

RUNNING…and it is feeling GOOD!

People always use the saying, “It’s all in the numbers”. If that is the case, our numbers are looking good.

When I held the folder of dog park petitions a few weeks ago, we had over 40 pages of signatures supporting the dog park. The average page consisted of 15 to 25 signatures per page, depending upon the formatting. This folder is “out there”,within our group, and I know has changed hands a few times to the good folks willing to help get more signatures. In other words, I don’t know how many signatures we have but…

Last night when I went to work on our personal website, I decided to look at our site activity. Due to a very busy schedule, I have been unable spend much time on it. Many of my pages containing things like: the low cost spay/neuter, and vaccination & microchip clinics, etc. for Southern Utah were out of date.

I took a look at our site activity statistic just as a side note and almost fell out of my chair.

On January 18,2012, I decided to post a quick blog about, “TenReasons to Support a Dog Park”. Our site statistics were fabulous. That one small blog created enough traffic , not just here in Cedar City, but worldwide,to bring us to almost 5,000 views (on just the blog) which tells me…there is a lot of interest in dog parks, not only in Cedar City but around the world.

I guess it shouldn’t be surprising when The Trust for PublicLandreleased its findings that dog parks are the fastest growing park in the United States. The USAToday reported the same with the quote, “Dog owners have become a powerful lobby,because they feel that "these children of ours are furry, they have four legs but we're still paying taxes to be here and we still want our recreational needs met." I couldn't have said it any better.

Keep the support coming folks! We might actually get approval from our City Council for a dog park in Cedar City. Go to our “Contact Us” page and leave a quick note telling us why you would support a dog park.

Negative comments are welcome too because we investigate your concerns and address them in the Q&A on our website.

10 Reasons to Support a Dog Park in Cedar City

We have been working hard to get a dog park in Cedar City for many reasons. Here are just a few.

Reasons to support our dog park:

Dogs that play hard are less destructive and calmer at home.

There are numerous health benefits for both dogs and their owners for instance exercise and socialization.

Dog parks are not just for dogs, they are a great place for owners to meet with other people who share their love of dogs.

Many disabled and senior citizens are not physically able to exercise their dogs, and having a dog park where dogs can play with others and run off their energy would be a great benefit to them.

We need a place where we can help educate dog owners where they can meet to learn from the professionals and other knowledgable dog owners.

It could help in our economic development to host large dog related events in our city

It would make it easier for our city to enforce leash laws and registration

It makes for a better community. It promotes health and safety because well exercised and socialized dogs are less likely to be a nuisance.

In working closely with our local rescues and shelters, it is my belief that there would be less dog surrenders if people had additional opportunities to bond with their dogs.

Our local homeless shelter dogs could have a place to run and socialize on a doggy field trip(Chris Johnson, Enoch Animal Control's statement) and show off their attributes for potential forever homes.

****As a Rescue Volunteer for over 25 years, I know that many dogs cannot display their true nature in a kennel situation.

Dog Park Pledges Needed

The dog park group is needing pledges to prove to the Cedar City Council, whom they will be addressing on February 15, 2012, that the community is in support of the dog park. Everyone who pledges will be acknowledged of their support via our website and on printed materials, See below:

Hello from Friends of the Cedar City Dog Park Project!

A new dog park in the city, where dogs can legally run off-leash needs community support.

Our group is in the preliminary stages of drawing up a master plan to detail land requirements,material costs, publicity, and liability assessments.

The benefit of having a local dog park is very popular as an established part of city life. Touristswho visit Cedar City for Summer Games, Shakespeare Festival plays, or who want a stop on theway to national parks often bring their dogs with them. A dog park would allow these pets abreak from being cooped up in motels and motor vehicles.

For the elderly or disabled who are unable to take their dogs on walks, a dog park providesa safe, manageable free-range exercise place. Local residents alike will benefit from an areaexclusively set aside for dog owners, where they may throw toys or enjoy teaching tricks orobedience training without the restrictions of a leash. Additional social life for both owners andpets can be enjoyed.

Actual support funds may not be accepted until the group obtains non-profit status. Thisapplication is in process. Meanwhile, we are asking for your support in the form of a financial pledge. We will remind you to honor your pledge when non-profit status is acquired. Any amount will be appreciated, no matter how small. Some have already expressed an interest in donating to the new dog park as soon as possible.

On the Donation Pledge sheet you may indicate your interest in helping the dog park. We will keep you apprised of special memorial items as the park is planned. A brick pathway,with a name on each brick, is being considered, as well as park benches, a water fountain for people and pets, memorial garden plaques, special trees, and so forth.

You will have an opportunity to choose a memorial gift if it appeals to you.
Thank you for your interest in the new Cedar City dog park. After it is built, and dogs are enjoying freedom in the open air, you will have the pleasure of knowing that your contribution to a dog’s life is very much appreciated.
